Directions

Before you go

Your first tap class

Is tap dancing beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. Tap is one of the most accessible dance styles for complete beginners. You don't need any prior dance experience, and most tap classes are designed to start from zero. The immediate feedback from the shoes (you hear every step) actually helps beginners learn faster than in some other styles. Adult tap classes in particular are built with absolute beginners in mind.

Do I need any prior dance experience to try tap?

No, not at all. Tap welcomes complete newcomers. Many people come to tap having never danced before, and they do brilliantly. The only thing you need is curiosity and a willingness to make noise in a room full of other people making noise — which is genuinely fun.

What should I wear to a tap class?

You'll need tap shoes (the metal plates on the soles are essential). Wear comfortable, moveable clothing like joggers, leggings, or shorts and a t-shirt — basically anything you'd wear to a gym class. Bring water and a small towel. Tap shoes come in leather or canvas and range from around £30–£50 or $35–$60 for beginners.
