Before you go
Your first jazz class
Is Jazz suitable for absolute beginners?
Absolutely. Jazz is one of the most beginner-friendly dance styles because it values attitude and feeling over technical perfection. Most studios offer dedicated beginner classes where you'll learn foundational steps and rhythms in a supportive environment. You don't need any prior dance experience to start.
Do I need a partner to do Jazz?
No, jazz is a solo style. You don't need a partner, and you won't be forced to pair up in class. Most jazz classes are taught in lines or freestyle format, so you can focus on your own movement without worrying about coordinating with someone else.
What should I wear to a Jazz class?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing like leggings, joggers, or shorts, and a t-shirt or tank top. Soft trainers, jazz shoes, or bare feet all work fine for beginners. The key is being able to move freely and see your body in a mirror if available.
