Before you go
Your first ballroom class
Is ballroom suitable for absolute beginners?
Yes, completely. Ballroom is built on fundamental steps that anyone can learn, and most studios offer absolute-beginner classes designed specifically for people with no dance experience. The structured nature of ballroom actually helps beginners learn faster because the patterns are clear and repeatable. Starting at beginner level means you'll be with people at the same stage, which creates a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Do I need a partner to take ballroom classes?
No. While ballroom is a partner dance, classes always have a system for pairing people up and rotating partners so everyone gets a turn leading and following. Most beginners come solo, and many make friends in class. You'll typically swap partners every few combinations, so you'll dance with several people in one session.
What should I wear to a ballroom class?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing like trousers, leggings, or a skirt that lets you move freely. For shoes, smooth-soled trainers or street shoes work fine for beginners; you don't need proper ballroom shoes right away. Avoid restrictive fabrics or shoes with sticky soles, as they'll slow your footwork and frustrate you.
