DirectionsBefore you go
Your first swing class
Is Swing suitable for absolute beginners?
Absolutely. Swing is one of the most beginner-friendly dances because it's built on a few simple steps that repeat. Most classes assume you've never danced before and teach at a pace that lets everyone catch up. The social, playful nature of Swing also means beginners feel welcome immediately.
Do I need a partner to start Swing?
No, you don't need a partner before your first class. Teachers will pair people up during the session, and you'll often rotate partners so everyone learns both the lead and follow roles. Many beginners come solo and make friends in their first class.
What should I wear to a Swing class?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes like joggers or casual trousers. Shoes are crucial: you need smooth-soled footwear (leather dance shoes, smooth trainers, or even clean plimsolls work) so you can pivot and slide. Avoid rubber-soled gym trainers, which grip the floor and make turns difficult.
